As a consultant cardiologist and internal medicine specialist; I have been asked this question on numerous occasions.
If you think of your dinner plate we will then divide it into different sections.
Half or 50% of your dinner plate should consist of non-starchy vegetables & fruits. For example, locally we have lettuce, pumpkin, butternut, carrots, spinach, okra, and eggplants.
It is nice to have a variety of cooked & raw vegetables. Using different colored vegetables also helps to make your plate look more appealing.
One of the remaining 25% of your dinner plate should have healthy grains. Brown rice, whole grain pasta, or a small portion of ground provisions. Ground provisions are loved by many locally but the portions consumed should be in moderation.
The remaining 25% of the dinner plate should consist of protein-containing foods. Peas, beans, and lean meats like poultry and fish are very good options.
Also, remember to avoid saturated fats, limit sweetened drinks, have a low-salt diet, and drink adequate amounts of water.
