BE FAST: Prevent And Spot A Stroke

Stroke-Hope-Grace-Cardiac-Centre-Antigua

Strokes occur when a blood vessel carrying oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or ruptures, destroying brain cells. The two main types of stroke are ischemic (clot) and hemorrhagic (bleeding). So how do we avoid them? Keeping track of your blood pressure is key as hypertension – also known as high blood pressure – is the main risk factor for a hemorrhagic stroke. Around half of such strokes are fatal. Other risk factors include diabetes, high cholesterol, being overweight or obese, smoking, and atrial fibrillation – an irregular heart rhythm that can lead to blood clots.

Controlling stress and blood pressure are very important in preventing strokes, as are a healthy diet and regular aerobic exercise for at least 150 minutes per week. How can you tell if someone is having a stroke? We use the BE FAST method.

Some people may also experience headaches, confusion, disorientation and loss of consciousness.
Rehabilitation should begin as soon as possible after a stroke to help with recovery. Some patients may need physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy.
Dr Georgette Meade, consultant cardiologist and internal medicine specialist, says it is important to support both those recovering from a stroke and their caregivers.

“Persons who had a stroke may become physically disabled, depressed, lose their ability to speak or experience personality changes. It can be challenging for caregivers to cope,” she says. “The support of family and friends is crucial for persons who had a stroke and their caregiver.”
